Green maritime methanol - a supply chain cost analysis

The maritime sector must do its part to limit global climate change caused by emission of greenhouse gases. The International Maritime Organization, in its 2018 Initial IMO GHG strategy, agreed to a 40% reduction1 of carbon intensity of international shipping by 2030 compared to 2008 levels [1]. The European Union sets ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction targets for maritime transport under its FuelEU Maritime program, undergoing final approval by legislators at the time of writing (Q4 2022).
Hydrogen has the potential to play an important role in the future (sustainable) energy system of the Netherlands and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For the development and application of energy technologies, it is important to consider social aspects in addition to technical aspects. Based on 14 semi-structured interviews, hydrogen developments in the Netherlands were mapped according to the four Societal Embeddedness Level (SEL) dimensions (impact on the environment, stakeholders and public, policy, laws & regulations and market & (financial) resources).

Financing the Energy Transition in the Netherlands: Developing a methodology to track financial flows in the energy system

The Netherlands has passed legislation that sets climate goals of 55% emission reductions by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050, compared to 1990 levels. To achieve this ambition, the government has established increasing targets for sustainable energy: 14% by 2020, 16% by 2023, 42% by 2030, and almost 100% by 2050 (EZK, 2019).
